  • MLB pays homage to Gehrig on anniversary (AP)
Derek Jeter helped Major League Baseball commemorate the 70th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's luckiest man speech Saturday, reading the famous line from the icon's stirring words during a video tribute before the New York Yankees' game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees also placed a wreath of red, white and blue flowers by Gehrig's monument in Monument Park and made a $25,000...
  • Ramirez homers, but Padres beat Dodgers (AP)

San Diego Padres pitcher Heath Bell(notes) celebrates after closing out the ninth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday, July 4, 2009 in San Diego. The Padres won 7-4.

Manny Ramirez needed only five plate appearances before hitting his first post-drug suspension home run. It wasn't enough to help Los Angeles overcome 22-year-old rookie Everth Cabrera's three RBIs and brilliant defense as the San Diego Padres beat the Dodgers 7-4 on Saturday. Ramirez homered in his second game back from his 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy.

  • Morneau has 4 hits, Twins top Tigers 4-3 (AP)

Minnesota Twins' Justin Morneau(notes) hits a seventh inning single against the Detroit Tigers in a baseball game Saturday, July 4, 2009 in Minneapolis, where he went 4-for-4 including a solo home run in the Twins 4-3 win over the Tigers.

The ball sprung from Magglio Ordonez's bat and landed in the seats to give the Tigers the lead, and Francisco Liriano's head and shoulders dropped as fast as one of his 88 mph sliders. Liriano fought to finish that seventh inning, though, just as the Twins did following a draining 16-inning defeat the night before.
